Applications FAQ
Is the Vernade Lab a good match for my research interests?
Our group primarily works on theoretical aspects of machine learning and reinforcement learning. Recent publications are the best guide to our current interests. We do not generally work on deep reinforcement learning or robotics.
What background is useful?
A strong foundation in mathematics, probability, statistics, and statistical learning theory is important for work on reinforcement learning theory. Relevant preparation can also come through control theory or stochastic processes.
What is normally required for an application?
When positions are open, applicants are generally asked for:
- An up-to-date CV describing their education and research or professional experience.
- A concise motivation letter, ideally no longer than two pages.
- Academic transcripts and any documents required by the relevant doctoral or fellowship programme.
- Recommendation letters when required by the programme.
The motivation letter should explain why the applicant wants to pursue the proposed position, how their background and research interests connect to the group, and, optionally, which specific research questions interest them.
Are Master’s projects or internships available?
There are no available projects or internships at present. When offered, they are usually connected to recent work by Claire Vernade or members of the group and are advertised on this website.
Should I send a spontaneous application or recommendation?
Because all current positions are filled, we are not reviewing spontaneous applications at this time. When a position is advertised, its announcement will include the appropriate application route and instructions. If a professor is recommending an applicant for an advertised position, the applicant should identify the professor clearly in their application.
What does the selection process usually involve?
The precise process depends on the position and will be described in its announcement. PhD selection may include a short technical and coding discussion, a conversation about a selected research paper, and a final meeting with Claire Vernade about the applicant’s interests and the group’s research.
